NAICS Code Lookup
Find the NAICS code for your business in the official 2022 classification — plus the closest SIC codes. Type what you do (e.g. "coffee shop", "software", "trucking") or a code prefix.
How it works
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by U.S. federal statistical agencies to classify business establishments. Every business activity maps to a hierarchical code: a 2-digit sector (e.g. 72 — Accommodation and Food Services), a 3-digit subsector, a 4-digit industry group, a 5-digit NAICS industry, and a 6-digit national industry — the most specific level, and the one most forms ask for. This tool searches all 2,125 entries of the official 2022 NAICS structure published by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Type a plain-English description of what your business does and the tool scores every NAICS title against your words: exact word matches count double, word prefixes count once, and the best 12 matches are shown with their code and hierarchy level. If you type digits instead, the tool switches to code-prefix mode, so entering "5415" lists everything under Computer Systems Design and Related Services.
Because many legacy systems, banks, and insurance forms still ask for the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), the same search also runs against the 4-digit SIC list and shows the closest SIC codes in a separate section. Everything runs in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server.
FAQ
What NAICS code do I need for SAM.gov?
Use the 6-digit NAICS code that best describes your primary business activity — the one that generates most of your revenue. You can add secondary codes later. Note that registering in SAM is completely FREE on the official site, sam.gov; be wary of third parties charging for it. This website is an independent lookup tool and is not affiliated with the U.S. government.
What is the difference between NAICS and SIC?
SIC is the older 4-digit system from 1987; NAICS replaced it in 1997 and is revised every five years (the current edition is 2022). Federal statistical agencies use NAICS, but some banks, insurers, and legacy databases still ask for a SIC code — that is why this tool shows both. There is no perfect one-to-one mapping: pick the SIC title that best matches your activity.
How many digits should I use?
It depends on who is asking. Government registrations (SAM.gov, SBA size standards) and most tax or census forms want the full 6-digit code. Market research and industry reports often work at the 2-digit sector or 4-digit industry-group level. When in doubt, provide the 6-digit code — anyone who needs less can truncate it.
